A Celebration of Resilience and Diversity

“Cesária” captures the gentle presence of Cesária Évora, whose music embodied a powerful message of cultural resilience. Through her art, Évora defied stereotypes and promoted diversity, leaving an indelible legacy that transcends borders. The statue by Hermine Bourdin emphasizes the importance of "femmage"—honoring women through monuments, statues, and other forms of recognition. This initiative celebrates the legacy of Cesária Évora, a powerful voice for women in music, capable of capturing the essence of saudade, that deep melancholic nostalgia resonating in everyone’s heart.

A Collaborative and Supported Project

This artwork was commissioned by Constructa, in close collaboration with the association "A Women’s Art Association," dedicated to promoting and supporting contemporary women artists. The project also received support from Plaine Commune Habitat and the municipality of Saint-Denis, highlighting the community’s commitment to cultural diversity and unity.

A Symbol of Multiculturalism

Located in the heart of Saint-Denis, an iconic and multicultural city, the statue of Cesária Évora stands as a symbol of cultural diversity and unity. It serves as a reminder of the artist’s universal impact beyond the borders of her homeland, offering residents and visitors a tangible testimony of her artistic heritage and global influence.

Femmage: Recognizing Women in Public Spaces

The issue of women's representation in public spaces is crucial. To date, very few women are honored with statues or monuments. With only five women in the Panthéon compared to 72 men, the lack of recognition for women’s contributions is striking. The concept of "femmage" aims to bridge this gap by celebrating women's achievements through visible and enduring artistic works. The statue of “Cesária” is part of this movement, highlighting the importance of giving women a prominent place in our collective memory and public spaces.
